| Resumo | To date very few field estimates of the horizontal coefficient of mixing (diffusion coefficient)in the ocean have appeared in the Latin American scientific literature. Such information is very useful or necessary for a large variety of coastal and marine environmental studies. The results of a study described herein are based on a field experiment made on October 22, 1981, in two coastal embayments along the southeastern coast of Brazil. Prior to the field work, Rhodamine-B dye in powder form was dissolved in methanol and the solution was separated into three aliquots, each containing about 100 gm. of dye. At the time and location of each dispersal, a balloon previously filled with dye solution, was placed into the water and subsequently broken with a pellet from a air gun. The initial area of each dye patch was considered to be 1 m2 at t = 0. During the experiment, an aircraft flew over the area and took a number of photographs with an RC-10 metric camera. From the film images it was possible to extract information on the areal changes of each dye patch. These data were then used to construct dispersion diagrams. Using a least squares method, the diffusion coefficients for the 3 dispersals were determined to be: K= 8.6x10 cm2 , 4.4x10 cm2 and 7.8x10 cm2 , respectively. The largest value corresponded to a bay more exposed to the sea, than the other two locations. These values, derived from aerial photographs, compares very well with previous determinations of K, based on conventional fluorometric methodology in a nearby area. The results suggest that it is possible to obtain reasonable estimates of diffusion from aerial photographs and that such remote sensing techniques need not require highly sophisticated equipment. |
